THE WEEK IN REVIEW

Philippine call centers will take comfort from the results of a Sitel study that shows that 70% of consumers prefer interacting with humans rather than robots. Craig Reines, chief operating officer for Asia Pacific at Sitel, is a man who knows about the benefits of the human touch, having just been named ‘Executive Expatriate of the Year’ at the prestigious Asia CEO Awards.  Another award winner was Philippines BPO pioneer, Sykes Asia, winning awards for the BPO Company of the Year and CSR Company of the Year at the Asia Leaders Awards 2018, held in Makati. WNS also picked up industry recognition by HFS Research, which named the company as a leading provider of global business process management services, and as the top service provider in the travel, hospitality and logistics sector.

Important industry moves saw Paychex buying Oasis Outsourcing for US$1.2 billion; TaskUs expanded its global footprint with five new offices, and Infosys completed its joint venture with Temasek. Meanwhile, the Philippines senate probed into the worrying trend of illegal Chinese workers in the country. Shortage of local workers is not yet a problem for the Philippines, but providing employment out in the regions is. On this front, it was announced that BPO firms will be attending the government-sponsored Clark Christmas job fair, and Bacolod council said it wants to create of special economic zone to attract international locators. The South American nation of Columbia is the latest in a growing list of countries that has announced interest in expanding investment in the Philippines.  State-owned Cagayan Economic Zone Authority also said it had enjoyed a bumper financial performance through attracting international blockchain firms.

In Cebu, boutique developer ArthaLand foresees robust demand continuing for Cebu office space, and is bullish about the performance of its major Cebu Exchange development in the city. The city’s BPO sector also received good news with the announcement that the new modern public utility vehicles due to start operating soon will be connected to the key BPO locations in the city. Improving the city’s transport infrastructure will be central to maintaining Cebu’s competitiveness. Meanwhile Cebu’s Fusion BPO Service Dragons showed that they can compete on the field as well as in the workplace, racking up their sixth win, by defeating the ePerformax Reds in the Elite Classic division of the 2018 Tanduay Athletics E-Leagues.
