Welcome to Inside Outsourcing: The Outsourcing Week in Review

THE WEEK IN REVIEW

Human resources initiatives featured prominently in the news last week as government and industry progressed on improving the country’s employment environment. A Philippines house of representatives’ panel looks at six bills to upgrade BPO safeguards against unfair work practices. The Department of Health (DOH) reiterated its warning about the damage to health of those working night shifts. The Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) announced that its national technology education plan for digitalization will be completed by year end, and IBPAP and DICT inked a deal to expand access to IBPAP’s career portal to improve recruitment.

The effort of industry players to lead in best-in-class HR practices was also manifest. Telus International Philippines won a couple of award as one of best employers in Asia in the Aon Best Employers Program Awards and the Asia Corporate Excellence and Sustainability Awards. Accenture was recognized for its ongoing employee training and learning initiatives by IBPAP. Teleperformance also honored its long term employees with awards.

Competition for highly trained staff is only likely to become more intense. Adding to the list of KPO sectors primed for rapid growth, a report came out that the Asia Pacific legal process outsourcing market is forecast to exceed US$29bn by 2024. International BPO Datatec posted a healthy US$2 billion in revenue as its operations improved; CSS Corp opened a second delivery center in Bonifacio Global City; Cagayan Economic Zone Authority’s (CEZA) revenues surged 212% in the first nine months driven by robust collections from offshore virtual currency exchanges, blockchain firms and their local business processing outsourcing (BPO) subsidiaries. Despite the mass of new commercial office space projects underway, demand has been robust. Philippine office space take-up is expected to increase by 66% this year according to Colliers International.

BPO firms continue to restructure, and new partnerships are being forged as industry players jostle to stay ahead in the fast-changing landscape. Accenture acquired TargetST8 Consulting, and Infosys completed its Fluido acquisition. Following hot on the heels of Iloilo’s success in returning to the Tholons Services Globalization Index list of top 100 outsourcing destinations, the Belgian Ambassador to the Philippines, Michel Goffin, said Belgium is looking to link-up with Iloilo’s information and communications technology (ICT) sector. Hopefully, chocolates and beer may soon follow.
