Coders group urges parents to get kids into programming

The founder of a coders organization is encouraging parents to get their children into computer programming to sustain the local IT industry. Joey Gurango, founder of Coders Guild, said if the country wants to become a global leader in the industry, then the workforce needs to be prepared at an early age. Gurango said the number of enrollees in computer science and IT programs and the number of schools offering these courses have declined, resulting in the decrease of available programmers as well. He suggested that schools offer these courses in the senior high level in order for the country to improve its talent pool. Gurango said his organization is interested in partnering with local government units to launch the Coders Guild’s Computer Science Education Program for Grades 11 and 12 students, and to offer free training to teachers. Cebu city is currently the first city in the Philippines that has adopted the program.
