Filipino work culture: The key to building successful teams
Understanding the nuances of different work cultures is essential for fostering effective teamwork and achieving organizational success.
One such culture that has gained recognition for its adaptability and resilience is the Filipino work culture. With a rich blend of values and communication styles, Filipino work culture offers unique strengths that can significantly contribute to building successful teams.
In the 494th episode of the Outsource Accelerator Podcast, Apex Outsourcing Founder Mathieson Moller delved into the Filipino culture and why the country is “a great place for business.”
Outsourcing to the Philippines
For decades, the Philippines has been regarded as a favored outsourcing destination. Outsourcing to this top offshore location is a no-brainer for many global businesses.
Despite the country’s many recognitions, Mathieson describes the Philippines as “extremely underrated, almost like a hidden gem in the world.” He adds, “It is a great place for living, but it’s also a great place for business.”
“The large corporations here are all in Manila, and it’s a sign for small businesses [that]
this is the place that you need to go for outsourcing.”
Key characteristics of Filipino work culture
If you’re considering working with Filipino colleagues or setting up a business in the Philippines, it’s important to understand the key characteristics of the country’s work culture.
Here are some of the most important characteristics that define the Filipino approach to work.
Strong sense of community
The Filipino work culture centers around the concept of “Bayanihan.” It emphasizes the importance of camaraderie and teamwork to achieve a common goal.
Filipinos value building relationships with their colleagues and working together towards common targets, fostering a supportive and harmonious work environment.
Friendliness
Filipino employees are known for their friendly and welcoming nature. They foster positive work environments through genuine warmth, openness, and willingness to connect with colleagues and clients.
Their friendliness enhances teamwork, smooth communication, and exceptional customer service, contributing to overall workplace success.
Describing his experience, the Apex Outsourcing Founder stated, “The [Filipino] people are extremely friendly… they’re very easy to work with.”
Impressive work ethic
Mathieson started his career working in a construction company in New Zealand where he had managed Filipino employees.
He said, “The one thing that always really stood out with working with Filipinos was the work ethic. They show up early, work extremely hard, are the last ones to leave, [and they] want to work every day.”
Resourcefulness
Filipinos are resourceful and creative problem-solvers, able to find innovative solutions to challenges at work.
They are not easily discouraged by limitations and instead, find ways to make the most out of available resources.
Further, Filipinos are resourceful in networking, taking on additional responsibilities, and seeking out chances for career advancement, demonstrating their ability to leverage available opportunities to their advantage.
Promoting the Philippines
Beyond its reputation as an outsourcing hub, the Philippines offers a wealth of opportunities for businesses looking to expand their presence in Asia.
By promoting the country as a strategic business partner, organizations can tap into the diverse talent pool, cultural richness, and business-friendly environment that the country has to offer.
Now that the Apex Outsourcing Founder is based in the Philippines, he feels that he’s “more credible” in promoting the country to clients based in New Zealand.
“The hard thing that I dealt with was that I am not as credible if I am based in New Zealand and promoting outsourcing as if I am in the Philippines promoting outsourcing…
Now, I can really grow and [prove] my credibility.”
As businesses expand globally and consider outsourcing, the Philippines stands out as an excellent choice. Guided by principles of community, adaptability, resilience, and strong work ethic, the Filipino work culture offers exceptional opportunities for success.
